Here is perhaps another of my most embarrassing moments captured for all to see. This also further evidences that when you travel by car as we did for so long there is about nothing you can do privately. Back early on we were back with a church in the North East that we had spent considerable time with in the past. As I remember we had revival services Wednesday to Friday and then we stayed for homecoming on Sunday. The Schedule for homecoming was a great one: Sunday School, Morning service, Dinner on the grounds, music by a quartet and then one final message. The quartet was late in arriving so as they were setting up there was nothing else going on. All who had come out were in the church waiting for the afternoon services to start. My son who was quite young then was on the front row (as is his practice) while they were setting up the leader of the quartet struck up a conversation with him. They talked about everything from the weather to where we had been, where we were going and how he liked living on the road. As they were talking I noticed that I was not the only one listening, after all there was nothing else going on. As I looked around I realized that thanks to boredom and great acoustics in the building everyone there was listening intently to this conversation and I remember thinking to myself “this will not end well” Just a few minutes later I proved myself right, unfortunately. The guy says to my son “I’ll bet you’re just like your dad” to which he replies “nope” Mr. Singer then says “You’re not just like your dad?” to which my son again replies, “nope” The final question then comes-“well then, how are you different” To which my ever astute son replies without missing a beat “Well… my dad picks his nose and I don’t” The worst part was that after the eruption of laughter died off and the group sang, I had to get up and preach to a group of people who were no doubt picturing me with a finger buried to the fist knuckle digging for gold. I am sure that is one I will never live down.
Lesson learned- not really sure but perhaps, duct tape has many uses......
