You might have noticed that many people that live in the north view those in the south in a negative light. You often see southerners portrayed as toothless, uneducated, and far less than intelligent. I don’t believe that any stereotypes are correct all the time, and for that matter, I can say from personal experience that the above mentioned stereotype exists, but not just in the south. There are people that fit this profile all over this country. But anyway, on with the story.
It was a Wednesday night service in a Baptist church on the outskirts of a large metro area (and for the record, yes it was in the south). Services went well and at the close of the service, the pastor took a young couple into his office to further talk to them about some things. Once everyone filed out all that was left was the song leader, the pastor’s wife and our family. Carmen had sung in the service and her and the song leader began to talk about music. At this time Carmen was working on plans to record a new CD. She was in the song selection process (that project never materialized, but that is not really relevant to this story) so their conversation drifted toward song selection, the recording process and various things of that nature. As they talked they drifted over to the piano and talked about a number of things musical related.
After a time, the pastor finished up, we were preparing to leave and the song leader came to say good night. On his way out the door he said to Carmen, “So when you gonna record this CD?” to which she responded, “I am not exactly sure, but soon I hope.” His response will be forever burned into my memory, he said “Ok, when you do it, if you can make two and I’ll buy the other one.”
Maybe you had to be there, I don’t know….
